Transport organisations across Europe are investing in artificial intelligence, data and advanced digital technologies. The greater challenge is moving from a successful pilot or specialist team to systems that work reliably across everyday operations.
GreenShift will examine that challenge during a live online webinar on Tuesday 29 September 2026. From AI Pilots to Real Impact: Building the Skills Transport Needs Next will bring together industry speakers and new European research on the skills and organisational capabilities needed to turn technical ambition into practical impact.
The webinar takes place from 15:00 to 16:00 CET, or 14:00 to 15:00 in Ireland. It is designed for transport and logistics organisations, infrastructure providers, mobility and technology companies, SMEs and start-ups, and innovation or R&D leaders.
Why this conversation matters
GreenShift's industry research found that 82.7% of surveyed organisations remain at an early or intermediate stage of AI and digital maturity. Advanced capabilities are often concentrated in pilots or specialist teams rather than embedded across operations. Skills shortages emerged as the most frequently cited barrier to progress.
The research also identified five recurring capability gaps, distinct organisational and resource constraints affecting SMEs, and growing demand for professionals who can work across technical and transport domains. These findings point to a wider issue. Technology investment alone cannot deliver change if organisations lack the people, applied knowledge and internal structures needed to use it effectively.
Industry perspectives on implementation
John McSweeney, CCAM Expert and Manager for Knowledge and Innovation at the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), will discuss automated mobility and the practical requirements for moving advanced transport technologies beyond testing.
Piotr Duszyński, AWS IoT Solution Architect at Transition Technologies, will present Smarter batteries. Greener transport, examining how connected technologies and intelligent battery systems can support more efficient and sustainable transport.
Carmel Somers, Human Capital Strategist at Digital Technology Skills, will present the findings from GreenShift's industry research, including the maturity gap, the capability shortages affecting adoption and the particular challenges facing smaller organisations.
Prof. Horacio González-Vélez, GreenShift Project Coordinator, will introduce the project and explain how its planned learning pathways connect advanced AI and high-performance computing skills with real transport and mobility challenges.
Jeff Sheridan, Founder of Matrix, will host the webinar and lead the closing panel discussion.
An evidence-based response to the transport skills gap
GreenShift is developing a European Joint Master's programme and flexible learning options focused on AI and high-performance computing for green digital innovation in transport. The programme is being shaped by research, industry engagement and real transport use cases so that learning remains relevant to the organisations and professionals expected to apply these technologies.
The webinar will keep the focus on the evidence and speaker insights.
